FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

How we count

What the records are, what a matching record means, and why a number here is not a statewide total.

Source

Where the records come from

The records come from a selected set of Florida jurisdictions, collected from their published permit data. Coverage is uneven: some jurisdictions publish more fields and go back further than others, and a jurisdiction that publishes nothing is not a jurisdiction with no construction.

That is why every page says the Florida permit records we analyzed, and never all Florida permits.

Matching

What a matching record is

A permit matches a term when its description contains language that identifies that work. A permit can match more than one term; counts are therefore not additive, and adding two terms together will usually overstate the total.

A job pattern is stricter: it requires every term in its list, or at least one from a designated set, to appear on the same permit.

Values

Declared job value

Declared job value is the value shown on the permit application. It is not a contract price, it is not what the work cost, and it is frequently a rounded estimate supplied by the applicant.

A value band is shown only where at least 25 matching permits carry a declared value. Below that we show the count and say nothing about value, because a median of a handful of records is not a distribution. We never publish a mean: the filed values include entries that are clearly errors, and one of them can move a mean anywhere.

Rankings

What a rank means

A rank is by matching records in our dataset, not by construction volume or spending. Markets are ranked only where they clear a minimum number of matching records, counties and cities are never ranked together, and a ranking is shown as a top list rather than a claim about every place.

Freshness

How current this is

Data through August 2026. Jurisdictions publish on their own schedules, so the most recent month in the data is not the most recent month of construction. The stamp on every data page is generated from the dataset itself rather than typed.
