GLOSSARY

Addition

An addition is new enclosed or covered space attached to an existing building, such as a room, a garage bay or a second storey. The records we hold separate it from a remodel because the building grows.

About Addition

An addition set shows the new footprint tied to the existing structure: the foundation, the framing connections, the roof intersection and the openings cut into the existing wall. Scope is usually driven by how the new space is used and by whether it changes the count of bedrooms, bathrooms or parking spaces. Additions commonly appear with remodel, plumbing and window replacement on the same record.

FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

In the records

"addition" appears in 19,177 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.

A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
