GLOSSARY

New Construction

New construction is the scope label for a building raised from the ground up, as opposed to work done on an existing structure. The records we hold use it for the whole build, from the foundation through the building's systems.

Detail

About New Construction

A new-construction set is the fullest drawing package the records carry: site and grading plan, foundation, framing, roof, elevations, floor plans and the mechanical, plumbing and electrical layouts. Scope is set by the occupancy the building is designed for, which is why the term travels with residence, townhouse, apartment and commercial headings. Phased projects are often recorded as a shell building first, with the interior finish picked up later.

FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

In the records

"new construction" appears in 53,358 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.

A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
