GLOSSARY
Beam
A beam is a horizontal member that carries a load across an opening or between supports. In the records we hold the term covers new beams, the replacement of a damaged one, and the beam added when a wall is opened up.

About Beam
Structural drawings give the beam's size and material, its span, the loads it carries and the connections at each end. Scope is driven by the span and by what sits above the beam, because a longer span or a heavier load changes the member and the posts that receive it. Beams are frequently recorded with column, joist, framing and load-bearing wall headings.
FLORIDA PERMIT DATA
In the records
"beam" appears in 4,784 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.
A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
