GLOSSARY

Stem Wall

A stem wall is the short wall that raises a building's floor above grade, carrying the floor structure on top of a footing. In the records we hold the term covers the wall, its footing and the anchors that tie the building down.

About Stem Wall

Stem wall drawings give the wall's height, thickness and reinforcement, the footing beneath it, and the termite and damp protection at the top. Scope is driven by the height the floor sits at, since a raised floor needs a taller stem wall and more fill beneath. Stem wall records commonly appear with foundation, slab and modular home headings.

FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

In the records

"stem wall" appears in 1,115 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.

A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
