GLOSSARY

Slab

A slab is a flat concrete platform, usually cast on grade, that carries a floor, a driveway, a pool deck or a piece of equipment. In the records we hold the term covers the pour, its reinforcement and its edge.

Detail

About Slab

Slab drawings show the outline, the thickness, the reinforcement and how the edge is formed, and they note any thickened areas under a bearing wall or a column. Scope usually turns on what the slab carries, since a slab under a building is part of the structure while a driveway or pad is a flat surface. A slab is a common companion term on records for screen enclosures, carports, sheds and pools.

FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

In the records

"slab" appears in 27,211 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.

A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
