GLOSSARY

Change of Use

A change of use is a switch from one occupancy or business use to another within the same building or space. In the records we hold the term covers the work that brings the space up to what the new use requires.

Detail

About Change of Use

A change of use set compares the existing use with the proposed one and identifies what has to change: exits, separation between areas, restrooms, ventilation and parking among them. Scope is driven by how far apart the two uses are, since a small shift may need little work while a different occupancy class reaches most systems. Change of use records commonly appear with conversion, buildout and restroom headings.

FLORIDA PERMIT DATA

In the records

"change of use" appears in 647 matching permits in the Florida records we analyzed.

A permit can match more than one term, so these counts are not additive and adding two of them together overstates the total.
